Layering: An Essential Function of Fall

Fall gives us beautiful landscapes and a reprieve from the scorching summer, but let's be honest, fall weather is confusing AF. What starts off as a brisk morning, ends in an uncomfortably warm afternoon. It's during these uncertain times that layering is an absolute must.

The concept of layering might seem easy enough, but once you start mixing colors and patterns, things can get out of hand rather quickly. Following these 4 simple rules will help you stay comfortable and chic.

Thick to thin.

You want the more voluminous items to be on top, leaving the thinner, more breathable items underneath. As you get warmer, you can easily remove layers. It also makes your ensemble more comfortable to wear.

Begin with a single color.

Decide on a principle color. This color will act as a base to the rest of your layering choices. It can be dark or light, but keep in mind that lighter colors tend to allow for darker, more bold colors to be incorporated into you layers.

Be conservative with patterns

A patterned piece can make your entire ensemble, but mixing with too many other patterns will make your outfit look chaotic. The key is to have a gradual change in patterns and textures from inner to outer pieces.

Appreciate the Importance of Accessories

Accent pieces help to make an outfit complete, but they can also add another layer of warmth as temperatures fall. Beanies, gloves or a nice cashmere scarf can keep you warm and toasty while adding an element of style.
